🌿 How to Prep Plants for Swapping (No Stress, Just Tips!)

Thinking about bringing plants to one of our monthly swaps? Amazing! You don’t need to be an expert—or bring anything fancy—to participate. But if you’re growing extras at home and want to share them, here are a few low-pressure tips to help your plants travel well and make it easy for others to fall in love with them.

🌱 Dig it up or pot it up

If you’re bringing a seedling or a divided plant from your garden:

  • Use small pots, yogurt containers, or even takeout cups—just make sure there’s a little drainage.
  • Keep the soil slightly damp so the roots stay happy.
  • Try to swap a few days before a heavy rain to avoid muddy messes.

đź’ˇ Pro tip: You can also bring bare-root plants in plastic bags with a damp paper towel wrapped around the roots.

🏷 Label it (the best you can)

People love knowing what they’re growing! You don’t need to know every detail, but if you can, jot down:

  • Plant name (common and/or variety)
  • Sun/shade needs
  • Annual or perennial?
  • Any special notes like “pollinator-friendly,” “drought-tolerant,” or “spreads easily”

You can write directly on the container or pop in a little label made from a stick, spoon, or plant tag.

🧪 Share what you know

Even if you don’t remember the official name, share your plant’s story. Did it come from your grandmother’s garden? Does it smell amazing at sunset? Has it survived in tough conditions? Those little details are often what make people pick your plant.

đźš« What to skip

We’re all about sharing what thrives—but try not to bring:

  • Invasive species (like mint that hasn’t been potted or English ivy)
  • Plants with visible pests or disease
  • Anything extremely rootbound or struggling

When in doubt, ask! We’re here to help.

💚 Remember: There’s No Requirement to Bring Anything

We’re all learning and growing together. Whether you’re bringing five plants, one seedling, or just yourself—you’re part of this.
